As We Destroy

Interview with vocalist Gene Cook aka Lord Destroyer through email. Interview by EvilTatoo

What's the As We Destroy story?

---Well, we are a metal band from Maryland/West Virginia. We've all known each other for quite awhile and have been in other bands together over the years. This is the newest one, and the best one I believe.

When exactly did you form?

---Nov.2001 was when we actually took the As We Destroy moniker.

Who's all in the band?

---Jonathan Britner- Guitar, Matt Rhodes- Drums, Gene Cook- Vocals, Gabe Jackson-Guitar, Tony Lindsey- Bass

Who came up with the name As We Destroy, and what's the meaning behind it?

---Jonathan and I made a list of some names we thought were cool, and then we just kept narrowing down to a short list which we ran by the other guys and that's the one that stuck. It really had to have the word DESTROY in it though. I think that word just kinda lets people know what they are in for. As for the meaning..."All will fall, nothing will be left standing and not one will be left alive...AS WE DESTROY!" Sound good?

Who designed your logo?

---Our long time friend Curt Taylor. He has done all sorts of artwork for us over the years. Curt and I graduated high school together, and we had art class together. I was always blown away with his creations. Hell, he was making silk screened band T-shirts and stickers back in the 80's in class for projects. So its really a natural choice to go with Curt. Anyone else interested in a logo or art can contact me and I'll get you in touch with him.

Are you guys playing out?

---Well, we are ready to. We just recently brought Tony in on bass and we kinda dumped about 8 songs on him at once. He's an incredible bass player and is now ready to kill em live! We play Baltimore on July 19th.

I must say the 3 song 2002 EP you sent me rules. Where was it recorded at? How many were made?

---Wow man, THANX! We recorded it at T.A.O.M.S. Studios in Maryland. The EP you received was a promo cassette. There were 200 of those made. That same EP will be available on CD through BATTLE ZONE RECORDS soon. We'd like to thank King Fowley from Deceased/Battlezone Rec for picking it up and putting it out on his label. Hopefully, they will be available by August.

How would you describe your music to someone who's never heard it?

---That's a tough one. We like to combine several elements of metal. Thrash, death, traditional. We have some guttural vox, some clean vox, some enunciated harsh vox. Guitar solos. Some straight up death. Some thrash. Some songs have odd time signatures. Others are more straight forward. We like to mix it up. We have a lot of influences.

Are you guys currently talking to any Labels?

---As I said before, the EP will be released on Battle Zone Records.

Do you guys have any merch? Cause that logo would be killer on a shirt or back patch.

---We will have stuff soon. Back patches would be sweet.

Top 5 Metal bands of all time?

--- Oh wow, he we go! I like these ones! Ha ha! Well, Iron Maiden will always be the #1 all-time metal band. And anyone that disagrees is either too young or just plain clueless. Judas Priest would be second on the list for the same reasons as above. After those two is where it gets really hard! Dio has to be there. Queensryche, pre-1990. Motorhead is up high on the list.

Top 5 albums?

---Man, it just gets harder!
Iron Maiden-Powerslave
Blood Feast- Kill For Pleasure
Metal Church-Metal Church
Queensryche-The Warning
Hallow's Eve-Tales of Terror

Which do you prefer: Vinyl or CD?

---Nothing in the world is better than a fine slab of wax. Vinyl Forever!!

What sucks more: New Metallica or New Megadeth?

---All I can say is one down...one to go!

If you could kill any NU Metal band who would you pick?

---Shit, all shit and nothing but shit! They are all the "Poison"s of the 2000s.

Do you like King Diamond and Mercyful Fate? If so what's your favorite album?

---I like the early "Fate" LPs. They had the more memorable songs. "Melissa" is the one for me!

Best maiden album?

---Powerslave. But my favorite Maiden song is "Phantom Of The Opera"

Are there a lot of poseurs where you live?

---Ha ha! What do you think? We have a Hot Topic store.

Favorite movies?

---Blood On Satan's Claw, Munster Go Home, The Reptile, The Hound Of The Baskervilles (Hammer version), Arsenic and Old Lace, Son Of Frankenstein, The Picture Of Dorian Grey, Horror Hotel

Favorite TV shows?

---The Munsters, Dungeons and Dragons cartoon

Favorite magazines?

---any with naked ladies!

If you could tour w/ any 2 bands who would you pick?

---Iron Maiden and Motorhead
